Chimney fires don't have to happen.   

1. Use seasoned woods only.
    
2. Build smaller, hotter fires that burn more completely and produce less smoke.
    
3. Never burn cardboard boxes, wrapping paper or trash.
    
4. Have the chimney swept and inspected on a regular basis.
    
5. The chimney is a critical component of your fire place and clean chimneys should not catch fire.
